Ben’s Epic Cornwall 2 Capehorn journey update.

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
A little while ago we wrote a little article about Ben Davenport and his charity 4x4 trip around the world from Cornwall to Capehorn. READ IT HERE if you’re not familiar with it. Journey Update! Ben has quite a nifty onboard tracking system on his Land Rover Defender which tracks his journey on a world map for everyone to keep up-to-date on his progress. I’ve just been chatting to him and he’s currently in Atyrau in Kazakhstan soon to be heading down to Almaty. Cornwall 2 Capehorn – Support for Ben Davenport!

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

The ELECTRIC WINCH SHOP supports Ben Davenport on his Cornwall 2 Capehorn charity expedition!

Ben Davenport is a 28 year old Noonan Syndrome sufferer about to embark on an immense challenge of travelling round the world to raise money for charity

Currently living in the South West of England in Cornwall Ben intends to set off from there on Thursday 21st April on a solo expedition route that will take him through Scandinavia via NordKapp, across Europe, Russia, The Central Asian “Stans”, Mongolia, across the Pacific to Alaska and then down through Canada, The United States, Central America and South America to Tierra del Fuego all in his trusty Land Rover fully kitted up with all the overland equipment required to do this challenging trip.

The trip is a reattempt as last year Ben embarked on this very same journey last year but unfortunately despite successfully reaching NordKapp  and traversing the Baltic States, Belarus and Ukraine the “wheels came off” (almost literally) 100 miles from the Russian border in Ukraine after an intoxicated, uninsured driver travelling at night in a small hatchback hit Ben’s Land Rover so hard it was turned onto its side! Luckily Ben escaped unhurt. Sadly the Landy didn’t and regrettably Ben had to limp the badly damaged vehicle back to England where, with the help from friends had it rebuilt. Ben vowed to complete this huge journey as soon as the Land Rover was back together. A very determined man!

While a fair few people have done such expeditions, what makes Bens solo trip that bit more challenging is that I’m afflicted by Noonan’s Syndrome. This is a relatively common autosomal dominant congenital disorder considered to be a type of dwarfism that affects both males and females equally. The principal features include congenital heart defect, short stature, learning problems, pectus excavatum, impaired blood clotting and a characteristic configuration of facial features. The syndrome is named after Dr. Jacqueline Noonan.

It is believed that between approximately 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 2,500 children worldwide are born with NS. It is one of the most common genetic syndromes associated with congenital heart disease, similar in frequency to Down syndrome. However, the range and severity of features can vary greatly in patients with NS.

(Showing the LandRover before the recent rebuild - before the crash!)

All our wishes are with Ben Davenport for a safe and successful charity expedition of a lifetime!
