Winch sails or ‘dampeners’ are used for a couple of reasons. They can act as a visual aid for other people in the area to see that there is a winch cable in use. The other reason they get used is as a safety prevention in the extreme case of a winch rope snapping. The weight within the sail dampens the rope forcing it to the ground rather than whipping under tension potentially causing fatal injury to people.
