Thule company information

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

To kick off Thule News I though it would be best to give some background information on Thule themselves.

About Thule
“Thule is the world leader in Sports and Utility Transportation offering accessories to active families, outdoor enthusiasts and professionals who want to transport their equipment by vehicles safely, easily and in style. The company has leading market positions globally and operates from more than 30 sites employing 3,500 people. The company had net sales of SEK 6.2 bn in 2008 and is headquartered in Malmö, Sweden.”

Pretty impressive stuff, but we can’t forget what has driven the Thule brand name forward and made them the biggest name in the industry has to be their distributers. The backbone to many large companies will always be their quality distributers that push themselves to promote and aggresively sell the product into the marketplace.

The Roof Rack Supermarket (part of Auto-Lift UK Ltd) are a typical example of a pro-active Thule distribtor with their Bradford, West Yorkshire based showroom displaying a large range of Thule Roof bars, roof boxes, cycle carriers, ski and snowboard carriers and even kayak carriers.. the list goes on!

THULE HISTORY

Rooted in Sweden, we are today a truly global company

In 1942, Thule was founded by the Thulin family, when Erik Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a Pike Trap that he designed and began to sell to the fisherman of Scandinavia. It wasn’t long before he added other practical things to his company’s portfolio. Business boomed, gaining profitably year after year.

By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate its business on car-related products, and before long the first roof rack was born. New product categories were added in the 70’s and new markets all over the world (e.g. US, Japan) were opened.

The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions (trailers and rooftop box manufacturing) and ever since, Thule has been in a growth mode. New markets have been opened, product categories have been launched and several companies have joined the Thule Group in the last 10 years strengthening the position of the Thule Group as world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.
