THULE Proride 591 – A popular cycle carrier

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Introducing the THULE 591 bike carrier.

Thule Proride 591

The Thule ProRide 591 cycle carrier is an extremely good design and a high quality manufactured bike rack. Through design it’s very quick and easy to install, easy to use, and looks great on any vehicle.

This has become a firm favorite amongst both professional and recreational bike users alike. The sleek aluminium structure ensures the cycle carrier is light enough to easily install on your vehicle and is shaped aerodynamically to reduce drag when traveling.

Due to the unique design, the 591 bike carrier frame holder will stay in whatever position you place it in, so you can position it before lifting the bike onto the roof to reduce any extra awkward maneuvering when you start to get your bike into position.

The sculptured design of the extruded aluminium bottom tray isn’t just designed to look good. Should you be parked on the flat, or facing slightly downhill, the bike will roll forwards into the jaws of the frame holder making it safer to guide your bike into position. The 591’s additional plastic wheel holders have a raised edge to them making it less likely to over lift your bike and accidentally place on the car roof rather than the cycle carrier.

On a typical car fitted with a standard Thule roof rack, you can fit upto 4 of these Thule 591 cycle carriers, however, it is worth pointing out that the further the bike carrier is to the middle of the car, the bigger the lift and the bigger the stretch to get it into place. So, if you have a high roof and you’re planning on taking the carrier on and off, you may want a handy set of step ladders in the car!

Once you have positioned your bikes frame into the 591 frame holder you can support it with one hand and use the other to turn the tensioning knob which is positioned a lot lower than other cycle carriers (around shoulder level) making it a lot easier to operate. The 591 tensioning knob has a ratchet mechanism that will click in increments as you turn it which in turn operates the frame clamp closing it slightly with each click until you’re comfortable that the bike is held securely. This is what Thule call their “Self adjusting frame holder”.

You can release the ratchet with a simple push button which releases the frame grip entirely making it so much easier than rival carriers to unload your bike. This particular carrier comes complete with some 20mm x 20mm adapters designed to be used in conjunction with Thule ‘Aero’ roof bars which have a T track slot machined into them.

Thule company information

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

To kick off Thule News I though it would be best to give some background information on Thule themselves.

About Thule
“Thule is the world leader in Sports and Utility Transportation offering accessories to active families, outdoor enthusiasts and professionals who want to transport their equipment by vehicles safely, easily and in style. The company has leading market positions globally and operates from more than 30 sites employing 3,500 people. The company had net sales of SEK 6.2 bn in 2008 and is headquartered in Malmö, Sweden.”

Pretty impressive stuff, but we can’t forget what has driven the Thule brand name forward and made them the biggest name in the industry has to be their distributers. The backbone to many large companies will always be their quality distributers that push themselves to promote and aggresively sell the product into the marketplace.

The Roof Rack Supermarket (part of Auto-Lift UK Ltd) are a typical example of a pro-active Thule distribtor with their Bradford, West Yorkshire based showroom displaying a large range of Thule Roof bars, roof boxes, cycle carriers, ski and snowboard carriers and even kayak carriers.. the list goes on!

THULE HISTORY

Rooted in Sweden, we are today a truly global company

In 1942, Thule was founded by the Thulin family, when Erik Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a Pike Trap that he designed and began to sell to the fisherman of Scandinavia. It wasn’t long before he added other practical things to his company’s portfolio. Business boomed, gaining profitably year after year.

By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate its business on car-related products, and before long the first roof rack was born. New product categories were added in the 70’s and new markets all over the world (e.g. US, Japan) were opened.

The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions (trailers and rooftop box manufacturing) and ever since, Thule has been in a growth mode. New markets have been opened, product categories have been launched and several companies have joined the Thule Group in the last 10 years strengthening the position of the Thule Group as world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.
