WARN 9.5 XP Winch Review

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The Warn 9.5xp is a 9500 lbs capacity Winch that features extreme sealing and 9,500 pounds of pulling strength for a good combination of both durability and performance for the most extreme conditions. It’s loved by serious offroaders for it’s fantastic long duty cycle and the fastest line speed of any Warn winch under load, to deliver speedy recovery even in the most extreme conditions.

Warn 9.5XP

The Warn 9.5xp consists of a high output parallel Series Wound motor, a 3-stage planetary gear train and a continuous-duty control pack to handle the longest pulls. In addition to these features, the winch includes full-face contact drum seals, motor and end housing gaskets to give your winch excellent water resistance. The XP is also backed by WARN’s limited lifetime warranty.

The “XP” name tag was designated by WARN to stand for “Extreme Performance”, which I suppose is what you’re getting when you buy this. Sure,… Sounds great, but is it better than it’s less expensive competitors?

Your typical options in this category would be as follows (Prices are as 27/7/11 from the ElectricWinchShop.co.uk):

WARN 9.5 XP - £889 +vat
Superwinch Talon 9.5 - £425 +vat
Champion C9500EWX - £280 +vat
Kingone 9.5 TDS - £353.21 +vat

So, as you can see, even at these discounted prices the Warn winch is over double it’s nearest comparible rival. For that kind of money you must be serious about your winching and offroading, also happy that it’s worth the extra hard cash. Will it outlast 2 Superwinch Talon winches? Will it outlast 3 Champion C9500EWX winches??!!! It’d be hard to say for sure without having a few years spare to find out I guess, so for now we’ll have to trust Warn are pricing their products based upon actual winch quality and features rather than just the branding! Having said that,.. if you’re serious about offroading, the big red “W” on the front of your winch usually let’s people know!
